The Devil’s in the Slide: Lucifer in the Sky with Diamonds

Hypothesis #5—Charlie Manson and company carried out a scheme of the Solar Lodge of the OTO and the Process Church of the Final Judgment after an emergency situation forced these groups to change their plans at the last minute.

Argument for: The Mayfair-based Process Church, a sect that jointly worshiped Yaweh, Christ and Satan, had a pronounced animosity for African Americans, as articulated by prosecution witnesses in unrelated cases. The Crowlyan Solar Lodge of the OTO took racial hatred to a deeper level by predicting a cataclysmic race war, a civil unrest that would result in the final extermination of all African Americans. Moreover, the Solar Lodge expected this ethnic apocalypse to occur very soon. Their leader, Georgina Brayton, held many properties across southern California. But out of all of them, she gathered her flock into the squalid Quonset huts of their compound in the desert town of Blythe, California, in April of 1969. She believed that the racial conflict would first break out in the inner city.

When months rolled by without hide nor hair of any racial Armageddons, the Solar Lodge started to plan the mother of all race wars. But in the middle of their scheming, police arrested the leaders for their torture of Anthony Gibbons, the six-year-old son of Solar Lodge member Beverly Gibbons. Thinking fast, they ordered their henchmen, led by Charles Manson, to begin the race war earlier than expected by murdering Gary Hinman and framing the Black Panthers for the crime.

The Process, who also had hooks into Charlie’s tribe, helped the OTO in this endeavor. They were at the scene handling the situation with Gary Hinman. They orchestrated the cover-up down to the bloody paw print on the wall.

Ed Sanders found two witnesses, whom he only identified by the first names Jay and Dave. These two both say that women outside of the family were at the scene while the slippies tortured and murdered Hinman. One of them spoke with a British accent over the telephone. Obviously, most of the Mayfair-based Processeans would have spoken with a British accent.

Sanders indicates that Manson’s involvement with both groups might have been deeper than many, including Bugliosi, indicate. Sanders, after all, places Manson within a special meeting to determine the fate of a young male sex-slave identified only by the nickname ‘Pussycat.’ Moreover, Sanders’ anonymous source specifically identified two women within Manson’s inner circle as participants of a filmed dog blood sacrifice, a type of ritual associated with the Process Church. And the description of the group's clothing by the unnamed informant matched that typically worn by Process members.

Also, months before the murders, a pack of Alsatians, the breed preferred by the Processeans, chased and threatened to attack Roman Polanski. If anything, this showed that the order hated Polanski, perhaps because such movies as Rosemary’s Baby treated Satanists like them as the villains.

Argument against: Perhaps if Manson or his followers were in cahoots with the Solar Lodge, he could have ordered his followers to begin the race war by committing the Helter Skelter murders. Since the Process might have had a similar goal in mind, maybe they would silently support what amounted to a covert action.

That’s a big ‘perhaps if,’ and a bigger ‘maybe.’

Anyone arguing that Manson completed a blood ritual on behalf of The Process or the OTO would have to presume that Charlie’s involvement was not only deep, but also subservient. While the evidence strongly indicates that Manson had some contact with both groups, there’s nothing to indicate that these contacts were anything more than superficial, other than second-hand accounts that are unreliable for obvious reasons. True, Manson had adopted some of the philosophies and beliefs of these groups, the Helter Skelter scenario arguably the most important. But Manson was an eclectic borrower from a number of belief systems. In addition to the OTO and the Process, Manson also borrowed freely from Scientology, the counterculture (when it suited him), jailhouse wisdom, occultism, and the Bible. And there’s nothing to indicate that Manson followed orders from these two groups.

And anyone, including the Process, could have animosity towards Polanski. That doesn't mean they'd try to kill him. Besides, if the Process really knew enough about Polanski’s schedule, why not wait for him to come back before having Manson kill everyone? After all, they could have either murdered Polanski after he watched his friends and wife get butchered. Or the killers could have left him alive to witness the carnage helplessly. Perhaps they could have even framed him for it.

What X. Dell really thinks of this hypothesis: The Process Church of the Final Judgment and the Solar Lodge of the OTO undoubtedly had some bearing on Manson’s thoughts throughout 1969, especially since he, like Georgina Brayton, believed that cataclysmic race wars loomed on the immediate horizon. There’s also every reason to believe that Manson spoke about this openly, for there were numerous eyewitness accounts of him discussing the topic. Yet it’s one thing to believe something will happen, another to see yourself as a causal factor of it.

The Helter Skelter motive emerges after Manson’s arrest, and comes first from sources at the fringes of the “family." People outside the group later hone this hypothesis. These sources asserted Manson’s belief in the Helter Skelter scenario. The prosecution subsequently touted this as the motive behind the Tate-LaBianca murders. Those who would later have something to gain by fingering Manson as the man who forced them to do what they did could readily support this as a conclusion. But they have a compelling reason to support this conclusion, for it minimizes their guilt in both a legal and moral sense.

At the same time, no one has offered any evidence that either the Solar Lodge or the Process had any plans to ignite a racial holocaust. So, if this were truly Manson’s motive, then one still cannot connect it to these quasi-Satanic organizations. True, the two strange women at the Hinman house, and the proximity of Hinman’s death to the sheriff’s raid on the Blythe complex raise a legitimate eye. But there’s nothing to keep Susan Atkins from speaking in a faux-English dialect. Furthermore, the cult had people coming and going into it all the time. So the stranger who met door visitors during Hinman’s torture and murder could have been either a new member, or an older member who had recently come back to the group after a prolonged absence. In short, the mystery women could have simply been Charlie’s girls disguised in plain sight.

And here, one can easily chalk up the proximity of events as a coincidence. Unless something more substantial surfaces, my feeling is that the Process and Solar Lodge’s influence over these events was evident, but quite minimal.

It's certainly hard to imagine Charlie being subservient in any situation

I don't buy this one at all ... if it was about race wars then the targets surely would have been black ... to rid the world of them as it were??? As per their belief in their white superiority? I would have loved to be a fly on the wall of their collective cells when Obama got sworn in ... hahaha!

I didn't Lucy was actually Lucifer maybe more apt for LSD :)

Some Christians during the colonial were unhappy that their religion was being shared by "lesser" mortals of the world and they did tend to move to alternatives that helped remain bigots. So wouldn't be surprised if the Process church had tried to provoke a race war. Did they?

It would be fair to say then, that they had an influence, though not an influence in the sense they were involved, but an influence in the sense that Manson bought a large part of their ideology.

So responsible in the sense that the Protocols of Zion were partly responsible for the Holocause, because they were Hitler's bedtime reading in Vienna.

I tend to agree with you on this Xdell-you obviously know a hugely greater amount about the case than I do-but this theory just doesn't strike a chord at all-unless 'smoking gun' type evidence comes up-In my travels around conspriacy land-I have seen a great many references to 'solar lodge' and processians-great and interesting as always Xdell! The folks who comment here are great too! In fact this is completely off-topic as to your post Xdell-and please remove this comment if you want-just thought of something I just got done asking in prior emails-why not give it a shot here-if you will allow me-its up to you-I hate to go so off-topic especially as you have done such a wonderful job with this series! I was wondering if you Xdell or anyone who might comment and see this has ever had a call come into their mobile from this #: 1-000-0 thats it -just those five numbers-it came into my cell on the eve of 1-22 and i didnt even see that i had missed a call til later-no voicemail left-when i called the number (didnt expect anything to happen) i just got reached this # in error message. The reason I thought i would ask is that in all the time I have had cell service-never had a call from a number like that-I was going to do a small post about it and ask if readers knew anything about this-but thought I should get some opinions first-if it is a common thing that other people have had before-then no big deal-just a curiosity-was wondering if it could be anything from mobile company testing or something all the way up to a weird synchrocicity-the night before call came in just had a rough draft of a post about how some people claim to get phone calls from the departed and voices left on message machines etc-like i say there was no weird message with this or anything-just thought I would ask around and see if it has happened to others before-like I say please remove comment if it is to off-topic for post! best as always to you Xdell-can't wait for the next post in this fascinating series-I am to the point that I would have to refuse jury duty on this case if anything ever came up in the future(highly unlikely:-)as I do not even live in CA-I am really tending towards the previous Struthers/Watson theory-but yet I know in a way it is 'wrong' especially with regard to rumors against Rosemary LaBianca-to kind of 'convict' people in your own mind-I really need to work on keeping an open mind with this case!

Didnt expect to be back so soon Xdell! A friend did some checking already and there is a great probability that it was just a stupid telemarketing company that had found a way around actual phone number-I really didn't think there was any 'woo-woo' involved-but dangit-after looking into stuff like this all these years why can't one lousy thing happen to me:-) all the best!

If something doesn't make rational sense, money is usually involved as the final motive...this hypothesis does not support this anxiom of human nature, therefore I would have to agree and consider this invalid.

Anyway, the idea of a "race war" is so incredibly absurd, especially in the confines of what these groups describe...ridiculous.

Charles, I agree. I can see him go along with someone else's plan if it suited him. But it's rather difficult for me to believe he'd be at the beck and call of such people as the Braytons or the DeGrimstons.

Aggie, that would be an interesting way to approach it. Instead of killing whites and framing blacks, they could have framed whites killing blacks, thus prompting revenge. After all, the riots in Watts, Newark, Detroit et al originated in police violence directed at the innocent. Still, these events were far short of a cataclysmic race war.

Problem is, an hypothesis doesn't have to make sense for people to believe it's true. So it's possible that someone came up with a nutty idea (lets kill white people and blame blacks--technically known as a 'false-flag' operation), and others followed.

But the quick of it is that, like you, I don't really buy that as the motive.

SJ, that's only the tip of the iceberg. There was the famous sitcom of the 1950s, I Love Lucifer, and the jazz anthem "Linus and Lucifer" by Vince Guaraldi.

As far as I know, neither the Soloar Lodge nor the OTO attempted to start a race war. But I think I understand your point about colonial Christians.

Foam, to my knowledge neither organization has conspired to assault or kill people of color. individual members might have, but I don't know of any.

Crushed, I would say they were relevant in terms of their role in helping Manson form his ideology, and for providing the Genesis of the Helter Skelter scenario. The "Protocols" would be a good analogy.

Devin, I can't say that the Struthers-Watson connection is definitely wrong. I'm just saying that I don't think that Struthers would so casually murder her mother over a drug business that's only a vague rumor.

BTW, I tried dialing that number. Verizon customer service answered on the other end. As far as "woo-woo" is concerned, I don't even think about these days, unless I have to shell out money.

Kate, apparently you weren't one of the ticketholders who were denied entrance. Glad you had a good time, though I didn't need to be in that crowd.

John, one of the things that's clear about these groups is that they're really cut off from most of society...by choice. The Processeans go to Xtul. The OTO'ers go to the desert.

A group that's isolated sometimes develops bizarre notions for the simple fact that there's no one to check them, no sounding board to tell them, "That's absurd." So it really wouldn't surprise me if someone came up with a really daffy plan, and that others believed it. But I do agree that this was a daffy plan.

To your first observation, I would add the word "secret" to money. After all, if we know about it, then behavior doesn't seem strange at all.

I was there, you were not, as is obvious by some of your assertions.

You are making more out of all of this than actually happened. Very Hollywood, I might add.

Um, Anonymous, if you paid any attention to this at all you'd realize I'm not making only a few assertions. If you'd care to give anything more concrete or elaborate, I'm all ears. BTW, what is that picture supposed to show? There's cryptic, and there's also disorganized thought that's symptomatic with schizophrenia.
