For Paper Mountains Majesty: Flickers

Before you freak out at the sight of stage blood and plastic gore, let me assure you that the following clip isn’t real. It’s staged. You might have already seen it, perhaps on television, where a host presented it as factual or of undetermined veracity. In fact, I first saw clips of it on the local news, which posed the question of whether this was real or fake.

I reckon we can make a game out of this. How many things can you see wrong in this picture? How many clues can you spot that scream “HOAX!”?

No fair Googling. Just grab some popcorn, a drink of your choice, and enjoy the movie.

When the images first came out-I couldn't believe the number of people taking them seriously (at least in conspiracy/paranoia land-which I am a proud member of -but I didn't fall for this one-best to you as always and thanks for yet another series!!

might be just the reflection, but the eyes seen to follow you or are shut at times..
or at least look in one direction.

Well that helped curb my appetite for breakfast! lol

I noticed the eyes as well... they were rolled back during the braing bit but not otherwise. I didnt see many other things other than that it looked like there was tin foil inside bits of the alien! lol

Unlike Devin, I bet if I saw this reported I might have wondered... Its really pretty well done for that time.

Devin, I have to be honest in that I didn't have much hope that the video was authentic when I first saw the news clips I mentioned. I purchased a copy of this in 1998 to see the whole thing for myself (without the benefit of commentary), and a number of things struck me immediately (I'll relate those in the next post).

Yet, it did confuse some people.

Libby, I know it's kinda yucky, and its fake. But I have to confess, while I did doubt its authenticity upon first viewing, it didn't strike me as obviously fake until later.

You know a bit about ufology. Have you seen this before?

Foam, from your perspective, how should the eyes have appeared? Or are you saying that you saw more than one face? Because there were two different models used for this shoot.

Helene (TAFKAK), I appreciate your candor. And you are right. This was very well shot, and that aids in the deception.

As for your appetite, perhaps we've hit upon a new weight loss craze? Wanna cash in with me?

2 different models you say? that might explain for the eyes perhaps. i don't know how the eyes should have been. but at least they should just stay in one position. seems as if the contour of the belly changed a bit too. i'm not talking about the cutting.

NYD, it was a hoax, for sure. Still, I wonder who was really behind it and why? Why did someone want us to believe this?

Foam, thanks for the observation. I'll include it in the next post.

Monique, I don't know if people believed it so much as they were confused by it. And we'll be adding more fuel to the fire.

Finally got caught up with the series X Dell...it seems there is just as much effort to spread misinformation and there is to acquire true information, but I would have to say that this isn't true, and I would propose that the former is greater than the latter. The question is, why? The answer to that question is probably more disturbing than we would like to think, and most likely not at all what we would either hope to expect or perhaps possess the capacity to expect.

LOL! I've seen this. Yes, it is pretty staged and you'd have to be under a rock to buy into it.

When this first appeared there was a wild theory that it wasn't a dummy on the table but the body of a human victim of progeria. Now that is sickening.

I remember reading that one purported slip-up was the coiled cord on the wall phone. Someone said that the cord should've been straight because the coiled ones didn't come on the scene until later. I don't know if that point held up.

Another criticism was the sloppy camera-work. Moving around as if trying to hide something; misdirection. Or maybe the cameraman was having trouble holding down his lunch.

The TV series The X-Files spoofed this in the episode entitled "Jose Chung's From Outer Space."

Also, it was claimed President Truman could be seen in the background during the event but that footage never turned up. Gee, another nail in "It's A Hoax!" coffin?

John, I'm going to aver that that a good deal of ufological information, whether accurate or not, has some type of source within government. If government officials and workers are disclosing such items independently of their administrative or command responsibilities, that's one thing. If they're simply doing their job, then we have something completely different.

Ricardo, the fake can look pretty legitimate while the real can look very fake. As an actor, you know that a movie scene that has rain isn't made with real raindrops. The real ones look too "fake" on camera. So it's helpful to understand what exactly is fake about this.

Ray, almost forgot about the progeria theory. You're right. That would be morbid.

Kevin Randle looked into the coiled telephone cord. It's unlikely that the Army would have used it. But the chord was available in 1947. He did affirm the problem with the camerawork, although we're going to hear from an a-list photographer and analyst who feels that the camerawork is expert--but for another reason.

If the video were made nowadays, it might have been possible to insert Truman in digitally.
